Wickham Lodge National Garden Scheme open day

Saturday 26th May 2012 | 11:00am – 5:00pm

This is the fifth year of opening and our ‘once a year day’, so we should feel confident and relaxed (we wish!).

What a winter! We worried about the damage of snow and freezing temperatures which didn’t happen (well maybe a bit of frost) but what we did lack was the rain (hence the hosepipe ban). This means that with toil and commitment the gardens should be looking their very best for this Open Day. We are expecting a lot of visitors as we were voted the Best Amateur Garden in Kent by ‘Kent Life’ Magazine 2010 and there still seems to be a lot of interest.

Please come and enjoy the occasion, sitting by the river whilst partaking of a delicious Ploughman’s Lunch or Cream Tea prepared by the Church Catering Team. Richard will be selling Cornish Pasties from the Chough Bakeries in Padstow (prize winning Cornish Pasties) to take away!!

In between, take a stroll around the 14 individual gardens which you come across usually unexpectedly. We hope to have the usual stalls, including plants and cakes. Some of the donations will be given to Aylesford Church.

The great work of the National Garden Scheme has resulted in £22 million being donated for nursing, caring and gardening charities. The NGS scheme supports the following charities:

Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Crossroads Care, The Queen’s Nursing Institute, The Gardener’s Royal Benevolent Fund (Perennial) and The National Trust.

We look forward to seeing you.

Christian Aid Week 13th-19th May 2012

Thousands of churches will stand together this Christian Aid Week to speak out for change. Some 100,000 committed volunteers will go out and put their faith into action, raising funds to help some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people. This includes Britain’s largest house-to-house collection – an extraordinary act of witness, demonstrating to our communities that we care about poverty and justice.

This year Christian Aid Week tells the story of remarkable change taking place in a community in rural Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is one of the hungriest countries in the world. But helped by Christian Aid partner the Methodist Church of Sierra Leone (MCSL), some people there have found the tools to move beyond hunger and speak out for the changes they want to see.

Christian Aid currently works with 507 partner organisations in 47 countries around the world. From Sierra Leone to Tajikistan, from Kenya to Bolivia, we are helping communities to make their voices heard and look towards a brighter future.

We believe that poverty is a scandal and that it can be ended.

Once again we are collecting house-to-house in Aylesford and Eccles. If you would like to leave a donation in your envelope, please do. We appreciate everybody’s support and generosity at this time.

Church website six months on . . .

Have you visited the church’s new website yet?

It is still new even though it is six months old! It went live on September 25th 2011 and was officially launched on Back to Church Sunday.

In these six months there have been over 4,000 viewers which is really good for a church website. 53% of these hits have been new visitors while 47% have been returning visitors. So it is really evenly balanced.

These visitors have come from 43 different countries. Apart from the UK we have had hits on the church website from people in countries ranging from the USA to the United Arab Emirates, from Singapore to Serbia, from Peru to Pakistan, Albania to Australia, from the Bahamas to Brazil and Trinidad to Tunisia. Our church, for a variety of reasons, has become international.

Most of the visitors to the website (70%) come through browsers such as Google. A significant percentage (15% hit our website direct www.aylesford-church.org.uk) while the other 15% come through links with other websites. Whichever route people come to the website, what is important is that it is proving a popular and very important link for the parish to the local, national and international community.

What are people looking for?

Obviously the home page is the most popular page, but second is the one detailing groups in the church and then comes the gallery of photographs. Clearly pages detailing news and events, weddings and the Brassey Centre are also popular as is the pages where sermons can be downloaded.

So be sure to hit the website regularly! And encourage others to do the same! It is updated regularly and has already experienced a number of developments in its six-month history. If you have some news or events you think should go on the website, email the details to Chris, the Vicar (cjvanstraaten@gmail.com) and he will pass them on.

The website is becoming a major asset to St Peter and St Paul’s Church in strengthening and expanding our community links worldwide and in spreading the Christian message.

Aylesford Church Alpha Course

Image

Many of you may have heard of this excellent course which looks at the basics of the Christian faith and allows plenty of space for questioning and discussion. It’s very suitable both for people inquiring about the Christian faith and for people who have been believers for years and want to shake-up their faith. After a break last year we will be holding a course again this year if there is a demand, and we will start in the early Summer. The course takes about 10 evenings, one evening a week, probably in the Vicarage. You are welcome to come and try this one and see whether it suits you. The first part of the evening is social, then we watch a DVD, and then we break into groups to discuss the topic. Many people speak of how the course has challenged and helped them. Please contact me if you would like to come along and try it. I will then sort out the evening that suits most people.

Day of Prayer for Africa

We held our 10th Day of Prayer for Africa on 3rd March.

In the morning we prayed about the importance of treating African countries justly: we considered the influence of debt, and money movement out of Africa, exploitation (especially of raw materials), the effect of land grabs by non-African countries on the food supply of the continent, and, finally, the importance of overcoming malaria and the significance of this for future population growth.

We heard about the work of Hands of Compassion and the Kenyan Children’s Project, both aiming to improve the future for youngsters.

We considered the effects of Climate Change on Africa, and hear about a visit to the Rochester Link Diocese links in Tanzania.

The afternoon tended to concentrate on different countries where we have links, such as Nicola Pinn with Wycliffe Bible translators in Mali, or which have recently been in the news.

We heard from Donald Werner, who works in Burundi; from Build Africa – a charity based in Tunbridge Wells and working in Kenya and Uganda; about Mission Aviation Fellowship’s work in South Sudan, and Christian Aid‘s work in Sierra Leone.

We considered the appalling violent past of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and prayed for justice and a peaceful future; other topics included the current drought in both East and West Africa, and the sad plight of Street Children who are present, often in very large numbers in all African countries. We were able to hear from a local contact of one charity, Ubaka U Rwanda, trying to improve the lives of some of these children.

Each year we try to involve local people who have connections with charities working in Africa. We are always interested to hear from people whose work we don’t yet know about – so if you have any contacts, please ask them to get in touch.

Children’s holiday Club theme of ‘LOVE’

There was an air of excitement as helpers busied themselves preparing for Holiday Club. The theme for the day was LOVE; what things children love, who they love and then how Jesus loves each one of them with a special love.

Chris’ games are always a favourite part of the day, some of them fast and furious, all of them enjoyed immensely. A special treat was the puppet theatre from Larkfield. As they showed the children the love of Jesus through songs and a bible story, with a good array of puppets, there was sheer delight on the children’s faces. I especially enjoyed a black male puppet with grey hair singing ‘It’s a wonderful world’. All the puppets appeared at the finale to the Farewell song from Sound of Music.

There were various craft activities for the children to do, from making photo frames to decorating buns and biscuits. Everyone worked hard with good results and lots of stuff to take home.

Lunch followed, then games and a prayer time. Soon after that it was time for the parents to collect the children, and for the helpers perhaps a bit weary, but happy too, to clear up and restore The Brassey Centre to normality.

Jenny’s planning and organisation were superb, enabling the day to run smoothly. Twenty five children had heard the Good News of Jesus and His love; such an important part of our church’s outreach.

Church Cleaners’ Dinner!

This was to be a ‘bring and share’ meal and my friend and co cleaner Ann Daniels, who is an expert curry maker, had volunteered to provide our contribution. To our relief the weather held although increasingly chilly. Entering the Brassey Centre from the cold and rather dark parking area was an unexpectedly magical experience. The door opened to reveal a room softly lit by myriad candles shining out of tall, glittering candelabra, revealing tables beautifully decorated with low central flower arrangements, highlighted by more candles and tea lights. This very festive atmosphere had been created by Louise and Alan Jackson and their team of helpers that Louise described as ‘Little Angels’.

As more and more people arrived the central serving table became loaded with a wide variety of savoury smelling dishes and after Chris had given a brief welcome and said Grace, we were encouraged to help ourselves. The main question proved to be where one should start when faced with Shepherd’s Pie, Pot Roast Beef, Mushroom Roulade, Chicken Curry and Chicken in Mango sauce plus Curry Mayonnaise Pasta, Yorkshire puddings, a large bowl of roast potatoes, three different flavours of rice, as well as carrots and broccoli. The answer – try a little of each, which most people seemed to do. The verdict was that all were delicious but the most novel were the Mushroom Roulade and the Chicken in Mango Sauce.

After a pause to refresh ourselves with flavoured waters, of which I enjoyed the one with the touch of elderflower, it was time for the desserts. Again there was a very wide selection of temptations ranging from the old favourites rhubarb pie with custard, sponge pudding with flavoursome sauce, two types of trifle and the Kent speciality, gypsy tart, to the lighter desserts of fruit salad, lemon and lime cheesecake and arctic pudding.

Replete we discreetly loosened our waistbands and relaxed over a cup of tea or coffee. Chris dished out after dinner mints between frequent weather checks through steam occluded windows and helping Kathy set up the entertainment. First trying to identify photos of 33 worldwide famous sites. At our table we were pleasantly surprised with how many we recognised, but could not compete with the near perfect score of the winner. After this came the hilarious Stand Up Bingo and then the brave opted to have a name pinned on their back and tried to identify through questions and yes/no answers. So ended a delightful evening of shared warmth, food and friendship, a night to remember and as a bonus we made it home before the snow set in.

Organ Appeal reaches up to £20,000

Aylesford Church Organathon
As we came to the end of 2011, the Organ Appeal reached a total of £20,000 (including an estimate of recoverable tax), towards the £50,000 target.
This is a very encouraging achievement, which will provide confidence in the project’s viability to external organisations, who will now be encouraged to assist us to our target.
A steady stream of donations has been supplemented by contributions from the sponsored hymn sing (£1,500), Organathon (£950), craft stall (£700) and flowers (£350), as well as collections and fees from a number of church users.
A huge thank you is due to the very many people who have helped us get this far. The half way point is now well within sight, so please do continue to support us!
